it’s enough just to breathe

You grew into my life
Then burst like song

Took a breath to fill your lungs
You'd waited so long

Stretch my heart somewhere new
Stretch to the stars

I love therefore I am
Connected we are…

I love you, I love you, I love you
I want you to be free
You will you will discover yourself
It's enough just to breathe

I see the spark
I know who you are

Take my hand, take my heart
This story goes far

I disappear into your eyes
Connected we are…

* ‘I love therefore I am’ coined by Paul Sretenovic and Andrew Purcell

the number games

Kaleidoscopic billboards drift by
The information high
Is the human race accelerating
Towards the finish line?

Feel the growing hunger
For an empire of numbers
And you run and you run through the tunnel
To an artificial light

Playing the number games
And I'm dying to win

Your mind becomes a ruthless tyrant
When you build upon a lie
You think that everyone is selling something
And everyone's a spy

Feel the growing hunger
To build an empire of numbers
And you run and you run through the tunnels
To an artificial light

Playing the number games
And I'm dying to win

We all know that your numbers up
But you say that you're feeling fine
A fast connection and you change direction
In the blink of an eye

Is the human race accelerating towards the starting line?

Wake me from the number games
I don't mind if you win
I don’t mind if you win
I don’t mind if you win

love is an organism

You see me in the street
And call my name
It’s comfort when we meet
You say you feel the same

Cup of tea on a seat
The earth our host
We're family when we eat
A piece of toast ...we make a feast of toast

Oh the hearts we live in
The threads we're weaving
Love is an organism

You're the yang to my yin
Charging up my grin
Love is an organism
Our world is an organism

Friends are like an embassy
A place of peace
They fly a flag of empathy
I feel my love increase
Feel my love release

Chorus

You're helping me to bloom
We're making sweet perfume
It's filling up this room

Chorus ...

We're a house that's living
With you I'm winning
Love is an organism

honest thomas

Come closer
Let me see
Come over
I want to believe

How do I follow
What I cannot see
And step out into...
A stormy sea

What is it that you
Want with me?
I find it so hard
This uncertainty

So you went on your way
I went on mine
You drew a breath
I drew a line

I saw you break rank
As I stepped in time
You fell in love
While I searched for a sign…

So you went on your way
I went on mine
I danced the circle
And closed my mind

I crawled my way out
And then fell back in
Would I let go if I could
Touch your skin?

harmonise

Sometimes a great love
Opens like the sky
A gentle wind comes
You feel like you could fly

Sometimes the darkness
Can lead you to the light
And break the emperor
End the winter’s night

Sometimes you’re bound up
By thoughts you can’t unwind
Endless grey clouds
Come and fill your mind

But above the clouds there's blue sky… blue sky
Above the grey clouds blue sky…a clear blue sky

Come out the winters over
Come out and touch the sunlight
Come out and speak your heart (sing your part)
Come out you’ve only one life

Sometimes a great pain
Will open up your eyes
Like honest conversation
That dances towards the light

Love will win lead you to a promised land
Love will win not as a lion but a lamb

Above the clouds there's blue sky… blue sky
Above the grey clouds blue sky…a clear blue sky

Chorus

Though we see the world through very different eyes
Through the many seasons of our lives
You and I can learn to harmonise
You and I must learn to harmonise

wild indigenous one

In 1991 Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette released a book called ‘King, Warrior, Magician, Lover’ that explores the archetypes of masculinity.

North = King - responsible, teacher/mentor, leader, parent, healthy discipline etc.

East = Lover - the sun rises in the east, open hearted, innocent, playful/joyful child (and eventually East is the holy old fool/sage).

West = Magician - creative, storyteller, muse, explosive passion (lava/volcanoes), the shadowlands, wise.

South = Warrior – deeply connected to earth/nature, grounded, wild/free, knows his true self, content to dance bare foot in the forest to one’s own sacred dance.

I was reading another book exploring the same concept of mapping the human psyche/archetypes etc. called 'Wild Mind' by Bill Plotkins and instead of using the term 'Warrior' for South he used the term ‘Wild Indigenous One'.

dreams

When the storyline you were holding to is dying
And all the truth you thought you knew was lying

A dark cocoon
Don't leave too soon
From this unknowing
So rest now my dear and trust

You're calling out but there's no one there replying...
If I fall down what will hold me now...dreams of flying

You're in a dark cocoon
But please don't leave too soon
You're still growing
There's still more colour yet...

The wound becomes a doorway through...and you're crying
The cracks are wide and you're breaking through...letting light in

An ancient truth
is born in you
You're transforming
She saves you
from a heart of hell ...your hell

A heart of love...sees heaven
A heart of peace...sees heaven
A broken heart...sees heaven

*Credit to Richard Rohr for “the wound becomes a doorway through” line as it’s based on his idea of pain being a privileged portal into the world of soul and spirit.

allegiance

I pledge my allegiance
To the poor and suffering.
To the wounded and hurting
This is my offering

Oh I stand with the oppressed
In solidarity
And those who are distressed
Here and across the seas.

I pledge my allegiance
To the ones we push aside
To the borders and margins
May we open up our eyes

We are born for freedom
And though the road is long
We're dreaming of a better world
So we’ve got to struggle on.
And though it sometimes hurts it's worth it
To seek the ways of love
So tune in to compassion and align
With the stars above

I pledge my allegiance
And find a unity
With the humble and voiceless
Like the animals, sky and trees

Yes the rich man's my brother
And I pray he helps us heal
And uses all those powers
To give us all a better deal

I stand with the oppressed
Until our days are done
We’re calling for justice
And restoration

We are born for freedom
And though the road is long
We're dreaming of a better world
So we’ve got to struggle on.
And though it sometimes hurts it's worth it
To seek the ways of love
So act with true compassion …and align…with love…

nautilus

Beyond your mind
Beyond your tribe
A holy dream
A holy light

A dawning heart
A growing child
A greater love
A deeper wild

"Nautilus - mollusk of the South Pacific and Indian oceans with a spiral, multi-chambered shell that is pearly on the inside. As the nautilus matures it creates new, larger chambers, and moves its growing body into the larger space, sealing the vacated chamber with a new septum (each septa is pierced in the middle by a duct called the siphuncle.) The chambers increase in number from around four at the moment of hatching to thirty or more in adults." - wikipedia

gods garden  (stranded)

Is the universe God's garden in slow bloom?
And are we gently held inside her sacred womb?

Or are we just here in love and fear
Children stranded in space?
Trying to hear the whisperings
The haunting sounds of grace

Then your beauty comes to speak to wounded ones
Tender mother tender father hear your sons...
And daughters

We are bound up in one song...

Or are we all here in love and fear
Children in a sacred place?
Trying to hear the whisperings
And find our human face...

In the end we're here in joyful tears
Beloved in this place
Trying to sing our whisperings
And become the path of grace...

earth community

My son Judah and I were jamming with synth sounds in Dec 2015 and this song grew from there. (The synth pad is his creation and is still on the recording). My youngest son Lenny is the one saying "From empire to earth community" (coined by David Korten who wrote the book 'The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community'). I’m a fan of the documentary What About Me so Earth Community is a nod to that genre.

the shadow and the ground

Put your hand out to the cup,
And slowly lift it up to the moon

It’s not impossible this puzzle,
you're goin’ to need some water soon

There are some things you can't find
with your mind, it's too big a view

As slow as evolution a gentle revolution in you...

The golden sun we spin around
Reminds me I have been found
But these shadows tie us to the ground
On this cosmic merry-go-round

She said "I know it's not been easy
but please don't put your pain on me"

So trade my violence for some silence
and try project the good I see

You can't destroy that part of someone
'cause hopeful is a thing you do

Each passing revolution a deeper evolution in you...

Chorus

You know they put their fears on Jesus
before they pierced him to the tree

Silence turns to violence
unless you let your shadow be seen

The golden sun we spin around
Reminds me I have been found
Making peace with the shadow and the ground
On this private merry-go-round
A private merry-go-round

* ‘Gentle revolution’ coined by the poet and cartoonist Michael Leunig

Thanks

Thank you to Paul Sretenovic, Rees Maddren and Mike Crowhurst for your reflective, constructive feedback – it helped me regain my bearings when I was feeling quite lost at sea. Mark Nebauer for playing double bass on track 3. Chris Wilson for helping tame that double bass sound on track 3 as I didn’t do a very good job of recording it (and Mark is so damn wild). And big thank you Chris for generously letting me use your studio for many of the songs on here. Susanna O’Leary and Drew Gillies for your playful vocals at the end of track 3 and of course Joel Saunders for your trumpet goodness. Ryan Nebauer for your magical piano work on track 4. Peter Branjerdporn for your harmonies on Harmonise. Jason Wilcox for playing dij on track 6. Jenni Bell for your violin and viola prowess on track 6 – it transformed the song! For track 8, Allegiance, thank you James McEwan for your funky bass line, Rees Maddren, Chris Wilson, Christianna Nebauer and Christel Palmer for your backing vocals and Dave Andrews for helping me refine the lyrics in the chorus. Matt Weimers for your brilliant production of Nautilus. Marlee Nebauer for your stunning vocal performance on Earth Community and Izak Daniel for your earthy, tribal djembe grooves…and Judah Nebauer for starting the whole song! And Lenny for your beautiful vocals.

Thank you Christianna Nebauer for your incredible support and encouragement as well as your amazing instagram photos for the front and back of the album and on this website. Malcolm Blaney for building this amazing website. Dave Fittel for the photo below of me playing in the cafe. Mark and Karen Nebauer for your encouragement and generosity in helping me get this mastered properly. Steve Lewis-Driver (and Paul Sret) for helping me with the ordering of the songs – it was like a Rubik’s cube. Matt Gray for the sweet mastering job. And lastly to Doug Sindel for getting the ball rolling simply by asking, “so when are you doing another album?” You’re all a lovely organism to be part of smiley

New Age Neanderthals Lyrics

New Age Neanderthals

When is the time to let this... go
When is the time to tell him...no

When is the time to wake up... and scream
When is the time to let go... of the dream

When is the time to cut yourself free?

To Be

Project yourself onto the wall
Convince us that you're twice as tall
A paper face your only care
Despite the ones that you would tear

As I look for who to love
In your pages yet to be
Yet to learn to love the page
I see in front of me

Project myself onto your wall
The shadows dancing twice as tall
I wore the paper face so thin
Was anybody taken in?

Cure

Say the prayer and get better
Leave the sin but not the weather
She tries to stand if we will let her
I need a bit more room
She said I need a bit more room.

Separate we're here together
She tries to heal but will we let her
Tell me now that you will get her
Something for the wound
Bring your cure soon...

And I'm answering to you
Will you say something to me?
In a race against our greed
Be the cure

You speak of change so long as you win
Want the wine but not a new skin
The story line is wearing too thin
So comfortable with greed
In the holy face of need

You have the right to tell me I'm wrong
But I'll still try to hear her new song
Hear the cry, the cry of 'how long'
Please bring the cure soon...
And a beautiful new tune ...

Chorus

Live the prayer we'll get better
She will dance like when you met her
In innocence and magic weather
We need a cure soon
Live the cure.... now

January

Her soul's a sanctuary
Where only stillness sings.
I'm caught in January
Where everything begins...
And is flowing

I leave the ordinary
On healing grace she brings
A love ever unfolding
In fields of flowering

And everything is flowing in the stream...

Love lead the way
Teach me to stay
In this beautiful place
In your miracle

Sacred we play
As gently we sway
So steal me away
In your miracle

I'm in a sanctuary
Alive to everything
A love that's still unfolding
In fields of flowering...

And everything is floating in the dream...

CHORUS

Both/And

Look, look where you're going
To be, if you don't move on.
Time, time will not change this,
Until, you dance along

Like a foreign view from another time
A point of truth from the other side
A part of you that had to die
And your point of view as you loose your life

Seek, the beauty of finding
true, the old is the new
Free, a freedom that's growing
Live, both sides of the coin

Like a foreign view from another time
A point of truth from the other side
A part of you that had to die
and your point of view in this new light...

Laugh Again

When you see, see a new colour
you wonder where it lived before.
There's always more, more to discover,
Heaven has a see through door.

But you have to open up to see
And walk an unknown way.
Love the world where you have grown
Watch it slowly fade away...fade away

Hey hey,
I'm breathing,
breathing love again.

Hey hey,
I'm dreaming,
dreaming love again

Open, no walls between us
Suddenly you’re free to explore.
Open hands giving receiving
Then you know you're rich and you’re poor

And I may not ever understand
So will love this unknown day
And let the colours cradle me
Hear the music on the way... a new day

Hey hey...

I need your touch I'm so frail
to feel something again
I need your breath on these sails,
to feel something begin
I need your arms so frail
to hold this together
I need your arms I'm so frail
please hold me forever

I need your love unveiled
to hear you laugh again...

Where I Come Alive

Then it came...
A salty scented breath from far away.
From across the ocean plains
Washing through my soul in waves

When freedom comes
In all its glory, it’s such glory
You finally see the story…
So let it take you somewhere new…

Seasons sun, I come undone,

You're where I come alive...

Fingers Through The Sky

It's taken me this long
To hear the words you sent to me
A film of dust collects upon
An over due apology.

On the day your world came down
Your eyes they opened wide...

You ran your fingers through the sky
And tears ran free  through your broken pride
Your fingers through the sky
You ran your fingers through the sky
The day your world came falling down...

It's taken me this long
To feel the skin I'm resting on
In silence I drift away
And call in but I can't stay.

And on the day your world came down
Your eyes they opened wide...

You ran your fingers through the sky
And tears ran free  through your broken pride
Your fingers through the sky
And you stroked the hands of thunder
Your fingers through the sky
And the tears ran free through your broken lie
Your fingers through the sky

Talking to you I found a depth I'd felt that was always bound.
The sun colours my deepest fears but it
won't stay, won't stay long.

Stranded Lyrics

Is the universe God's garden

Or are we just here

Tender mother tender father
Hear your sons...

Poems

The Aliveness Is At Hand

Imagine a world filled with folks fully focussed on flourishing.
Imagine people coming out as themselves
in strange and wonderful new ways.
Coming out as human beings, dancing beings royal beings!

Imagine people shedding scaly skins of black, white and grey
into the wind like ash and then...
embracing colour.

Imagine if we saw others not as competitors but as companions.
Each on their own course learning the art of compassion.

Imagine people choosing surrender and humility
On knees bowed before the great mystery
That gave birth to us all.

Image people choosing creativity over prescription
And creatively choosing optimism.

Imagine if peoples primary concern was not money
but fairness and justice.
Imagine if the prosperous nations
boycotted Christmas just once...

And gave generously to the poor.

“Imagine all the people living for today”.

Now.

Being fully alive and looking after one another...now
Healing one another through our gifts.

Imagine if we truly lived connected...

to each other,

to the animals,

to the earth...

to the Great Creator.

May we tune into frequencies of goodness, gratefulness
and love...

The aliveness is at hand.

One Of God's Languages...

God spoke to me very clearly today

but if I put it into words it would sound absurd.

Something like flower, flower, tree, flower,

breeze, bird, rock,

inhale, exhale,

love.
